History
The Charles A. Frueauff Foundation was founded in 1950 by the Last Will and Testament of Charles A. Frueauff, a successful New York attorney who gave his time and resources to many New York charitable organizations. Harry Day Frueauff, brother of Charles, was the Foundation's first president. In the early 1970's, Harry Day Frueauff, Jr. became the third Foundation president. His leadership not only helped increase the Foundation's resources but also broadened its grant making strategies. Foundation assets increased sevenfold and the average grant increased from $5,000 to $25,000. David A. Frueauff, grandnephew of Charles, was elected 5th president in 1996. In its 56 years of existence, the Foundation has made grants in excess of $112,000,000 to more than 600 agencies and institutions. President's Message to Nonprofits: The Trustees of the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation deeply believe that the Foundation is not, nor has it ever been, about us: the Foundation, its staff or trustees. The Foundation is about those who are on the front lines daily addressing the pressing issues facing America. It is about serving those who are diligently working to aid those who are less fortunate and in need of a helping hand. It is about assisting those who are developing new ways of dealing with complex issues. It is about listening to agency leaders as they assist those they serve realize their dreams of a better life. Society is confronted with the problems of AIDS, poverty, hunger, health care, children's welfare, the needs of the working poor, quality education for all, shrinking government budgets with increasing demands and our grantees are out there on the front lines fighting and hammering away at these concerns. You inspire us! We will all continue to learn and respond to the needs of an ever changing society. The changes will bring even more questions: How can the most economically vulnerable adjust to the rapidly increasing energy costs while their wages remain stagnant? How will increased college tuitions and continued cuts in federal student aid impact individuals and institutions? What impact will the billions of dollars being spent on the War Against Terror mean for the budgets of service providers? How are the needs of returning veterans going to be met? What is the long term impact of the 2005 hurricanes in rebuilding the Gulf Coast? The weight of these pressing issues can be overwhelming, yet you continue to answer the call. You don't give up, but instead continue to aid, nurture, serve and love those in need. Because of your work, the Foundation's trustees and staff are truly grateful to have the opportunity to get to know you and the amazing services you provide. We are lucky to witness the positive and profound difference you are making in the lives of so many. Thank you for all you do and continue to plow ahead undeterred by unforeseen circumstance in your service to others!
